02 Sep The Emergency Care Services Costing and Classification Project (2015)
The Independent Hospital Pricing Authority (IHPA) engaged a consortium led by Health Policy Analysis that includes HealthConsult to develop a new patient based classification system for emergency care departments and services for Australia for the purposes of activity based funding (ABF). The classification development work is underpinned by a patient-level costing study that includes prospective data collection in around 20 Australian emergency departments and services over an up to three month period that will collect data on postulated cost drivers and measure emergency care costs. The project includes data development work to modify, enhance and/or develop data elements to reflect the postulated cost drivers, which will support the collection of data to measure costs and ultimately the design of the new emergency care classification. The project commenced in June 2015 and is anticipated to be completed by mid 2017.
