Literature review of B-type natriuretic peptide (2015)

The Department of Health engaged HealthConsult to undertake a literature review of the use of serial measurements of natriuretic peptides (B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) or N-terminal prohormone (NT-pro) BNP) in patients with established heart failure. The purpose of the literature review was to determine clinical best practice relating to BNP and NT-proBNP assays to monitor and manage patients with heart failure in an ambulatory/outpatient setting. The literature review involved a comprehensive literature search and preparation of a summary document outlining the findings from published systematic reviews and recommendations from recent clinical practice guidelines. The project was undertaken to inform discussions at the meeting of the Pathology Services Advisory Committee (PSAC) in July 2015. The project commenced in March 2015 and was completed in May 2015.
