Critique of targeted intraoperative radiotherapy for early breast cancer (2014)

The Department of Health engaged HealthConsult to undertake a critique of a submission to the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) to include targeted intraoperative radiotherapy on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) for patients with early breast cancer. The submission assessed the safety, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and financial implications of the proposed intervention. HealthConsult’s critique was considered by MSAC when it formulated its advice to the Minister for Health on whether the medical service should be publicly funded. The project commenced in June 2014 and was completed in August 2014.
